Virginia Women’s Rugby hosted Winnie Chao’s (CLAS 2009) GWU team in 2 friendly matches this past Saturday on Mad Bowl. The “Bad News ‘Hoos” came away with a resounding victory over their very good Division 2 team. We also had a nice pizza social with them on the field before they went to pick Apples at Carter’s Mountain Orchard. A great time was had by all, and we got a lot of good time in for some back-up players who are sniffing A side time. Thanks again, Winnie!
In their first official game of the season, UVA women’s rugby beat out the Maryland Terps at home on beautiful Madison Bowl field. Try scorers included Jackie Kim, Laura Lyons, Brianna Kim, Kelley Frank, Laura Watkins, Cameron Boland and Danielle Theberge with multiple conversions made by Katie Estep. The Flo’s were able to use their speed on the outside to turn the corner on Maryland’s wings. Though Maryland always brings a strong starting pack, UVA’s forwards were able to keep them at bay with technically sound play. This game also marked the debut of a new crop of ruggers for the UVA team with high potential for the future.
Next weekend, the Flo’s are celebrating their alumni with an alumni match on Madbowl Saturday and a joyful tubing excursion down the James Sunday.
Virginia Women’s Rugby is set to join the new Mason-Dixon Rugby Conference with conference play starting Fall 2012. The new league is being formed with the help of USA Rugby’s Tam Breckenridge. USA Rugby has mandated that all collegiate rugby teams join a conference by Fall 2013, so the VWRFC is in good shape for the near future.
